D5: A new pen for a new era

atures – a rechargeable battery, a microphone, speakers, a USB port, an LED screen. When used on the right kind of paper, it will remember what you write; plug it into a PC, and it will store your notes.

And that's not all. Put your cursor on your notes, and listen to the audio of what was said at the moment you wrote it. Through handwriting recognition, your notes are now searchable. You can transcribe them; software can translate them.

Livescribe has also developed "dot paper," paper with millions of tiny dots that the pen can read to mark its place. While it will sell dot paper, Livescribe will also make it available for printing. Individually coded dot paper will enable someone to write a note, say, to Marggraff on one of his business cards when he is miles away, and then when they dock the pen at a PC, the note will be emailed to him instantly.

Other useful tricks include writing yourself a note in the back of a taxicab in a foreign country, and then letting the pen translate it, aloud, so the driver will know your destination. Many other third party applications are in the works, he said.
